A fish in the pond

For a Buddhist, days are quite ordinary and not so quite. We try “to chop wood and carry water” like Layman Pang did, striving not to get entangled with the hooks of Samsara. We live in this world also. We have to go to work, pay taxes, take care of a family… But sometimes, in moments that are pretty ordinary, somehow we get glimpses of that Other World. This is reassuring, and we feel in these little instants, blessed. We want to dance like David in front of the Ark. No other like Witter Bynner would have expressed it like this:

There is a dear weariness of love…
Hand relaxed in hand,
Shoulder at rest upon shoulder.
And to me that pool of weariness is more wonderful
Than crater, cataract,
Maelstrom, earthquake…
For it is a double pool
In which lie, silent,
The golden fishes of sleep

(Weariness, Witter Bynner)
