Zen means meditation, but often people complicate its meaning by assuming that when they intensely think about something, they will achieve the desired result. \u00a0“I’ll meditate on that,” they say.\u00a0 But intense thought is not meditation. Yes, it may provide an opportunity for the ego to recede, but it doesn’t necessarily provide the spontaneity that occurs in the ego’s absence.\u00a0 For so long as there is a shadow of ego-consciousness, there is a shadow of contrivance.\u00a0 And contrivance prevents the free expression of the Buddha Self’s spontaneous response.\u00a0 In other words, the state that must be attained is the complete\u00a0absence\u00a0<\/em>of ego-consciousness.<\/div>\n

A monk once sought the instruction of a great Zen teacher.\u00a0 He entered the master’s room and knelt before him, pressed his palms together and said, “Master, please accept me as your disciple.\u00a0I want to attain Enlightenment.”<\/div>\n

The master laughed. \u00a0“My son, before you can attain that, you must first be able to utter a single word of unassailable truth.\u00a0 Go home and return when you can tell me one truthful word. Then I will accept you as a disciple.”<\/div>\n

The monk went home and asked himself, “What will the master consider a truthful word?”<\/div>\n
He paced his room, back and forth, thinking and then rejecting a variety of words that he thought the master would accept.\u00a0 Finally, he settled upon a word and returned to the master.<\/div>\n

“What is your truthful word?” the master asked.<\/div>\n

Again the monk returned to his room and paced back and forth, thinking of a word and then rejecting it. Oh, what would the master consider a truthful word?\u00a0 Finally he thought of a word and returned to the master and knelt before him.<\/div>\n

“And what truthful word do you have to tell me?” the master asked.<\/div>\n

The monk cleared his throat and softly pronounced, “Love.”<\/div>\n
